Procedure
7.7 g (33.2 mmole) of the compound obtained in step 2 was dissolved in a mixture of 27 ml of ethanol and 7 ml of water and to the resulting solution were added 20 g (0.36 mole) of iron powder and 0.33 ml of conc. hydrochloric acid. The resultant was refluxed with stirring for 1 hour, filtered through Cellite to remove the remaining iron powder and washed with ethanol (50 ml×3). The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate. The resultant was passed through silica gel and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 6.6 g of the title compound (yield 98%).
