A suspension of ethyl 3-(benzylamino)butanoate (5.9 g, 26.7 mmol), methyl bromoacetate (3.0 ml, 31.7 mmol) and potassium carbonate (7.4 g, 53.5 mmol) in acetonitrile (100 ml), was stirred at room temperature for 18 hs. The reaction was filtered through celite and concentrated to give ethyl 3-[benzyl(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)amino]butanoate (6.45 g, 82%) as a clear oil, MS (M+H)+=294.
