Procedure
A mixture of 4-chloromethyl-5-methyl-2-phenyloxazole (15.6 g), methyl 4-hydroxyphenylacetate (12.5 g), potassium carbonate (20.8 g) and N,N-dimethylformamide (80 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. Water was added to the reaction mixture and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with an aqueous saturated solution of sodium chloride, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel chromatography to obtain methyl 4-(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolylmethoxy)phenylacetate (23.8 g, yield 94%) as crystals from an ethyl acetate-hexane (1:4, v/v)-eluted fraction. The crystals were recrystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane to obtain colorless crystals. m.p. 74-75° C.
