In a manner similar to that of Example 1(i), by reaction of 3.07 g (12 mmol) of ethyl 5′-hydroxy-2′-methylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate with 6.7 g (15 mmol) of 3,4-bis(benzoyloxymethyl)benzyl bromide and 2 mg (14 mmol) of potassium carbonate, the desired product is obtained in the form of a colourless oil (m=5.7 g; Y=77%).
