To a stirred suspension of 1,2-dihydro-4-phenyl-8piperazinylimidazo [1,2-a]quinoxaline 5-oxide (1.5 g, 0.0043 mol) in dimethylformamide (20 ml) under an atmosphere of nitrogen and cooled in an ice-bath, was added octanoic acid (0.67 g, 0.0043 mol.) and diphenylphosphorylazide (1.29 g, 0.0047 mol). The reaction mixture was allowed to stand for 15 minutes. Triethylamine (0.95 g, 0.0047 mol) was added to the reaction mixture and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand for 1 hr, then warmed to room temperature over an additional 1 hr period. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was dissolved in chloroform. The solution was washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and then water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate and concentrated in vacuo to yield an orange solid. The orange solid was recrystallized from chloroform:ethyl acetate to yield 1,2-dihydro-8-(4-octanoylpiperazinyl)-4-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]quinoxaline 5-oxide, (1.6 g) as yellow crystals, m.p. 212°-213° C. (Found: C,70.72; H,7.44; N,14.77%; C28H35N5O2 requires C,71.01; H,7.45; N,14.78%), represented by the structural formula: ##STR25##
