Procedure

A procedure similar to that described in Example 15 was repeated, except that 1.1 g of ethyl 2-[4-(2,4-dioxothiazolidin-5-ylmethyl)phenoxymethyl]-2-methylchroman-6-carboxylate (prepared as described in Example 17), 10 ml of acetic acid and 5 ml of 3N aqueous hydrochloric acid were used, to afford 814 mg of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 223°-225° C.
