It was found that a novel compound 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-cyclohexene-1-ol can be obtained in good yield by conducting a decomposition reaction in the initial stage of a reaction in the absence of a dehydrogenation catalyst and a hydrogen acceptor, and that by-products such as p-phenylphenol can be virtually inhibited by conducting the dehydrogenation reaction of the novel compound to give 4,4'-biphenol of high purity.
