Procedure
A solution of methyl 5-((2-fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)carbamoyl)-2-methylbenzoate 35 (0.904 g, 2.5 mmol), THF (20 mL), lithium hydroxide (0.18 g, 7.6 mmol), and water (5 mL) was heated at 55° C. for 24 hours and then cooled to room temperature. The aqueous layer was separated, cooled in an ice-water bath, and acidified with 6 M HCl (aq) to pH 1. This solution was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×10 mL), and the combined organic phases were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated to afford 5-((2-fluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)carbamoyl)-2-methylbenzoic acid 36.
