To a solution of phenylmethyl 2-(3-{[(tert-butyl)oxycarbonyl]methyl}-2,4-dioxo-1,3-dihydropyrimidinyl)acetate (1.2) in ethyl acetate (20 ml) was added 20 wt. % palladium hydroxide (50 mg). After stirring the mixture at room temperature under a hydrogen atmosphere for 1 hour, the catalyst was removed by filtration. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure to give 2-(3-{[(tert-butyl)oxycarbonyl]methyl}-2,4-dioxo-1,3-dihydropyrimidinyl)acetic acid as a white powder.
