Procedure

Tert-Butyl piperazine-1-carboxylate (0.50 g, 2.7 mmol) and ethyl 1-bromocyclobutanecarboxylate (0.52 ml, 3.2 mmol) were dissolved in DMF (5 ml). Potassium carbonate was added, and the mixture was heated to 85° C. for 24 h. The mixture was diluted with brine and then extracted twice with EtOAc. Combined organic layers were washed once with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (SiO2, gradient, 45-55% EtOAc/hexanes) to give tert-butyl 4-(1-(ethoxycarbonyl)cyclobutyl)piperazine-1-carboxylate as a colorless oil (223 mg, 27%).
