Procedure

A solution of trans-2,3,4,4a,9,9a-hexahydro-1H-indeno[2,1-b]pyridinium hydrochloride (3.00 g, 14.3 mmol) and triethylamine (4.36 g, 43.1 mmol) in 95 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide was stirred at room temperature and bromopropane (1.85 g, 15.04 mmol) added dropwise. After the mixture was stirred for 18 h at room temperature, the solvent was removed and ethyl acetate/water were added. The organic layer was washed with water and dried over MgSO4. The filtrate was concentrated to give a yellow oil (11.66 g, 82%).
