A mixture of ethyl 2-formyl-3-methyl-7-oxo-4,7-dihydrothieno[3,2-b]pyridine-6-carboxylate (1.06 g, 3.99 mmol), potassium carbonate (826 mg, 5.98 mmol) and methyl iodide (1.24 mL, 19.9 mmol) in DMF (30 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 24 hours. The mixture was diluted with water (60 mL), stirred with ice bath cooling for 5 minutes, and then filtered. The collected solid was washed with water and dried in vacuo, leaving a pale tan solid (764 mg, 69%).
