Procedure

Zinc chloride (2.73 g, 20 mmole)was treated with anhydrous benzene (10 mL) followed by diethylamine (1.55 mL, 15 mmole) and tert-butanol (1.4 mL, 15 mmole) and the resulting slurry was stirred at room temperature for 1.75 hr until all solids had dissolved. To the cloudy suspension was added 4′-chloro-3′-nitroacetophenone followed by 2,4′-dibromoacetophenone and the resulting light yellow slurry was stirred at room temperature for 68 hours. The resulting thick white slurry was treated with 25 mL 5% aqueous sulfuric acid with stirring and the resulting slurry was filtered. The solid was washed with water (50 mL), MeOH (50 mL) and CH2Cl2 (50 mL), then dried in vacuo at room temperature for 1 hr and at 55° C. for 5 hr. giving the title compound as a white solid, 3.4 g, 86%.
