Sodium hydride (60% in oil; 71 mg) was added under ice-cooling to a solution of benzyl 4-[3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-oxotetrahydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl]piperidin-1-carboxylate (0.59 g) obtained in Example 39a} in THF (30 mL), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. Methyl iodide (0.11 mL) was added to the reaction mixture, followed by stirring at room temperature for 15 hours. The reaction solution was diluted with an aqueous saturated ammonia solution to separate the organic layer. The organic layer was washed with saturated saline solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain the title compound (0.60 g, quantitative) as a white powder.
