A mixture of 4,4-diethoxybutanenitrile (5.0 g, 32 mmol), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (2.4 g, 35 mmol) and sodium bicarbonate (2.9 g, 35 mmol) in methanol (50 mL) was refluxed for 5 hours. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue was diluted with EtOAc and water. The water layer was extracted with EtOAc (2×). The combined organic layers were washed with water, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give the product, which was used next step without purification. 1HNMR (300 MHz, CD3Cl): δ 4.73 (br, 1H), 4.51 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 1H), 3.66 (m, 2H), 3.50 (m, 2H), 2.21 (t, J=8.2 Hz, 2H), 1.86 9 m, 2H), 1.19 (t, J=8.2 Hz, 6H).
