Procedure

A solution of methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate 111 (0.977 g, 6.42 mmol) and trifluoro-methanesulfonic acid diethoxy-phosphorylmethl ester (2.12 g, 7.06 mmol) in THF (50 mL) was treated with Cs2CO3 (4.18 g, 12.84 mmol). The resulting reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h at room temperature before it was partitioned between EtOAc and sat. aqueous NH4Cl and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The organic phase was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, and evaporated under reduced pressure. Purification of the crude product on silica gel (eluted with 60-90% EtOAc/hexane) provided 1.94 g (quantitative) of methyl phosphonobenzoate compound 112 as a clear oil.
