Procedure

A solution of di-tert.-butyl azodicarboxylate (2.85 g) in dichloromethane (10 mL) is added dropwise over 15 minutes to a solution of 2-(4-bromo-3,5-dimethylphenyl)ethanol (950 mg), di-tert.butyl-iminodicarboxylate (3.75 g) and tributylphosphine (4.4 mL) in dichloromethane (40 mL) at −10° C. The resulting solution is stirred for 2 hours while warming to room temperature and then partitioned between saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution and dichloromethane. The aqueous phase is extracted with dichloromethane. The combined organic phases are dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The residue is chromatographed on silica gel (cyclohexane/ethyl acetate 99:1→70:30) to give the title compound. Yield: 1.19 g; LC (method 8): tR=1.06 min; Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=451 [M+Na]+.
