To a solution of 4-bromo-3,5-dimethylbenzonitrile (1 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL) is added NH4Cl (770 mg) and NaN3 (800 mg) and the mixture is heated to 100° C. for 12 hours. After cooling to room temperature the mixture is diluted with water. The formed precipitate is filtered off, washed with water and dried to give the title compound. Yield: 650 mg; Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=253 [M+H]+.
