Procedure
4,6-Dichloropyrimidine (1.01 g, 6.6 mmol), 4-aminoindole (900 mg, 6.6 mmol) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (3.14 ml, 18 mmol) were dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 ml), and the reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water; the aqueous layer was subjected to re-extraction with ethyl acetate, and the combined organic layer was washed with brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure; and a small amount of methanol was added to the residue to crystallize; and the crystals were filtered off, washed with methanol and ethyl acetate, and dried under aeration to yield the title compound (599 mg, 2.5 mmol, 37%) as pale brown crystals.
