Procedure

A mixture of chloroacetyl chloride (1.03 g) and EtOAc (5 mL) was added dropwise with stirring to a mixture of (1S)-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (1.58 g), sodium hydrogen carbonate (960 mg), water (25 mL) and EtOAc (25 mL), followed by stirring at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction liquid was extracted with EtOAc, and the extract was washed sequentially with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and saturated brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane-AcOEt, 4:1) to obtain (1S)-2-(chloroacetyl)-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (2.14 g).
