Procedure
To a mixture of 1-acetyl-2-phenylpiperidin-4-one (3.364 mmol, 1.0 eq.) and pyrrolidine (3.7 mmol, 1.1 eq.) in toluene (16 ml) was added PTSA (0.336 mmol, 0.1 eq.) and the reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 5 h using a Dean-Stark apparatus. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to obtain the crude product which was used in the next step without further purification.
