The above piperazine (85.3 mg, 0.261 mmol) was dissolved in 5 mL of DCM and 5 mL of EtOAc, and cooled to 0° C. Hydrogen chloride gas was bubbled through the mixture for 30 seconds. The reaction stirred for 30 minutes, warming to ambient temperature. The slurry was concentrated to afford 4-(2-cyano-1-benzofuran-5-yl)piperazin-1-ium chloride.
