step 3—A mixture of 26 (530 mg), 48% HBr (1.05 mL) and HOAc (10 mL) in a sealed tube was heated at 90° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was cooled to RT, carefully poured into saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution, and then extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to afford 2-ethyl-6-hydroxypyridine (28) as a light yellow solid.
