Procedure
To a solution of 1.5 g of methyl 3-hydroxy-5-{6-[(2-methoxyethyl)carbamoyl]-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-1-yl}thiophene-2-carboxylate (compound C5) in 10 ml anhydrous N,N-dimethylformamide were added 610 mg K2CO3 and 1.14 g 1-(bromomethyl)-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzene under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture was stirred for 12 h at room temperature, poured into 400 ml of ice water and the resulting precipitate was filtered. The filter cake was washed with water, dissolved in 300 ml ethyl acetate and washed with 50 ml saturated aqueous KCl solution. The organic layer was separated, dried with MgSO4 and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was crystallized from methanol to yield the title compound.
