A solution of methyl 1-(4-bromobenzyl)-5-methoxy-2-methylindole-3-acetate (10 g, 24.9 mmol) and KOH (1.7 g, 30 mmol) in 45 mL of THF, 5 mL of H2O, and 2 mL of methanol was heated at reflux for 1 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. and neutralized with concentrated HCl. The solvent volume was reduced by rotary evaporation. The precipitate was collected and washed with H2O. The white solid was dried in a vacuum oven to give 9.5 g (98%) of the carboxylic acid.
