A mixture of 4-[3-(2-benzyloxyphenyl)-3-carbonyl-1(E)-propenyl]benzoate (35 g), 10% Pd-carbon (7 g), acetic acid (350 mil) and trifluoroacetic acid (7 ml) was warmed at 30° C. under 10 atm. of hydrogen for 18 hours, filtered and the filtrates evaporated. The residue was triturated with hexane and dried to give methyl 4-(3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propyl]benzoate (26 g).
