Sodium hydroxide (2N, 5.0 mL, 10.0 mmol) was added to a solution of [2-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-5-methyloxazol-4-yl]-acetic acid methyl ester (1.5 g, 4.18 mmol), MeOH (15 mL), and THF (15 mL). After stirring for 1 hour, the mixture was poured into water, acidified with HCl(2N) and extracted with EtOAc. The organic extracts were dried over MgSO4. Evaporation and crystallization from acetone/ethyl ether/hexane gave a white solid (1.25 g, 87% yield), m.p. 205°-206° C.
