Four parts of 6-chloro-2,3-diaminoquinoxaline was combined with 3 parts of propionic anhydride in 2 parts of tetrahydrofuran. The mixture was heated for three hours during which time a thick slurry formed. The solid was collected from the hot mixture by filtration and washed twice with two parts of tetrahydrofuran. The gray solid was air-dried to give four parts of 6-chloro-2-ethyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]quinoxaline, m.p. 298°-300°.
