Procedure
A mixture of 1-amino-1-cyclopentanemethanol (3.00 g; 26.05 mmol) and triphenylmethylchloride (7.26 g; 26.05 mmol) in 70 ml CH2Cl2 is heated overnight. The reaction mixture is cooled and flash chromatographed twice using 5:1; hexane:EtOAc to obtain 1-hydroxymethyl-1-triphenylmethylaminocyclopentane as a thick yellow oil which is used directly in the next step.
