Ethyl 2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)acetate (5.50 g, 17.8 mmol) was dissolved in 100 mL of dry tetrahydrofuran and cooled to −78° C. Lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (1.0 M in hexane, 18.0 mL, 18.0 mmol) was added dropwise via syringe under nitrogen. The reaction was brought to 0° C., stirred for 1 hour, and then cooled to −78° C. A solution of bromoacetonitrile (1.24 mL, 17.8 mmol) dissolved in tetrahydrofuran was added, and the reaction was stirred for 2 hours while warming to room temperature. The reaction was quenched with saturated NH4Cl solution and extracted with diethyl ether. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. Chromatography on silica gel (Analogix Intelliflash 280; 10% ethyl acetate/hexane) yielded the title compound: 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 7.38-7.32 (m, 4H), 7.22-7.17 (m, 4H), 4.25 (q, J=7.2, 2H), 3.32 (s, 2H), 1.23 (t, J=7.2, 3H); MS (DCI+) m/z 365 (M+NH4)+.
