Examples 15 and 16: Diethyl cyanomethylphosphonate was converted to its anion with sodium hydride in dimethoxyethane solution. An equal volume of DMF was added, followed by 2-fluoro-4-formyl-1-triphenylmethylimidazole. Reaction at room temperature gave 4-(2-cyanovinyl)-2-fluoro-1-triphenylmethyl imidazole. A suspension of this in MeOH was reduced by magnesium turnings to give 4-(2-cyanoethyl)-2-fluoro-1-triphenylmethylimidazole, having the following n.m.r. spectrum in CDCl3 : 2.71 (t, 4H); 6.42 (s, 1H); 7.1-7.4 (m, 15H).
