4-(2-Cyanoethyl)-2-fluoro-1-triphenylmethylimidazole was dissolved in acetone and treated with aqueous KOH. Hydrogen peroxide was added in portions over seven days at ambient temperature. Extractive work-up and trituration with ether gave 4-(2-carbamoylethyl)-2-fluoro-1-triphenylmethylimidazole, having the following n.m.r. spectrum in CDCl3 : 2.58 (m, 4H); 5.3 (br s, 1H; 6.0 (br s, 1H); 6.26 (s, 1H); 7.0-7.35 (m, 15H).
