Procedure

0.07 g (0.15 mmol) of methyl 2(S)-ethoxy-3-{4-[2-(3-heptyl-1-methylureido)thiazol-5-yl]phenyl}propanoate is placed in 3 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 0.2 ml (0.2 mmol) of aqueous 1M lithium hydroxide solution. The reaction medium is stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. 0.07 ml of aqueous 1M lithium hydroxide solution is added and the medium is heated for a further 5 hours. The reaction medium is diluted with water, acidified to pH 4-5 and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. 55 mg (82%) of 2(S)-ethoxy-3-{4-[2-(3-heptyl-1-methylureido)thiazol-5-yl]phenyl}propanoic acid are obtained in the form of a white solid with a melting point of 97° C.
