DMF (5 drops) was added to a suspension of 7-hydroxy-3-methyl-6-[(1-methylethyl)sulfonyl]-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylic acid (12.5 g, 27.6 mmol) in dichloromethane (120 mL). Oxalyl chloride (3.62 mL, 41.4 mmol) was added slowly. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. Methanol (30 mL) was added, and the mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to provide methyl 7-hydroxy-3-methyl-6-[(1-methylethyl)sulfonyl]-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate. This material was used without further purification. MS (m/z) 468.1 (M+H+).
