Procedure

A mixture of 4.64 g (0.03 mol) of 6-chloropurine, 12.9 g (0.15 mol) of methyl acrylate, 0.3 g (0.002 mol) of finely ground potassium carbonate and 50 mL of dimethylsulfoxide was stirred at room temperature for 48 h. The solvent was removed by distillation (0.1 mm) and the residue was extracted with methanol. The insoluble salts were removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was then dissolved in methanol, and petroleum ether was added to effect crystallization. Yield 3.71 g (51%); m.p. 93.5°.
