4.6 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate is added to 5.0 g of 4-sec-butyloxyphenol in 80 ml of absolute dimethylformamide, and the mixture is stirred for one hour at 80° C. At this temperature, 3.9 g of 5-chloromethyl-3-methylisoxazole is dripped in and the mixture is stirred for a further seven hours at 90° C. The batch is then stirred into 300 ml of ice water, extracted three times, each time with 100 ml of methyl tert-butyl ether and the organic phase is washed twice with 2N sodium hydroxide solution (50 ml in each instance) and then three times with water (50 ml in each instance). Drying over sodium sulfate and removal of the solvent under reduced pressure give 6.6 g of 5-[4(sec-butyloxy)-phenoxymethyl]-3-methylisoxazole, which is obtained, after chromatography over silica gel using toluene/ethyl acetate(1:1) as eluant, as a viscous oil. According to 1H-NMR spectroscopy, the oil is pure.
