Procedure
To a solution of 3-Phenyl-5-(dimethylaminomethylene)-imidazoline-2,4-dione (1.3 g) in dimethylformamide (20 mL) at 0° C. was added 1M potassium tert-butoxide (5 mL) in tetrahydrofuran. After 5 min 2-Chlorocycloxeanone (700 mg) was added and the mixture was stirred for 30 min. Acetic acid (1 mL) was added and the solvent was removed at reduced pressure. To the resulting residue was added ammonium acetate (10 gm) and acetic acid (25 ml) and the mixture was heated to reflux for 4 h. The solvent was removed at reduced pressure and water (50 mL) was added. The resulting solid was collected, washed with methanol and dried to yield 2-Phenyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydroimidazo[1,5,a]quinoxaline-1,3(2H,5H)-dione (Compound 21) as an off white solid, m.p. 236°-240° C.
