4-(5-Phenoxypent-1-ynyl)benzyl alcohol--To a solution of 2.02 g of 4-5-phenoxypent-1-ynyl)benzaldehyde (from step (2) above) in 50 mL ethanol at 0° C. was added 640 mg sodium borohydride. After stirring for 1 hour, then addition of 8 mL water and evaporation of the solvents in vacuo, the residue was diluted with 2% H2SO4 and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine and saturated NaHCO3 and then dried and the solvent evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound (99%).
