To a solution of 5 parts of 4-{[4-(diphenylmethyl)-1-piperidinyl]methyl}benzenamine in 40 parts of methanol is added 4 parts of a 30% solution of hydrogen chloride in 2-propanol, whereupon just sufficient anhydrous ether is introduced to induce precipitation. The precipitate is filtered off and recrystallized from a mixture of methanol and ether to give 4-{[4-(diphenylmethyl)-1-piperidinyl]methyl}benzenamine dihydrochloride melting at 233°-237° with gas evolution. The product has the formula ##STR4##
