The product from Example 23 (7.25 grams) is heated with 90 ml. of 1N hydrochloric acid at reflux temperature for 8.5 hours and cooled. The mixture is diluted with water and extracted with methylene chloride. The aqueous layer is then evaporated to dryness using 2-propanol for facilitating removal of water. This gives 4.85 grams of 2-acetyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophen-4-amine hydrochloride.
