A solution of 101.5 g of extemporaneously prepared monomethylamine in 700 ml of benzene was added at 20° C. with stirring to a mixture of 101.6 g of the product of Step B in 1 liter of ethanol and the mixture was stirred for 2 1/2 hours at room temperature and was allowed to stand for 12 hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to obtain 125 g of 3-nitro-7-methylamino-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro [5H] benzocycloheptene-5-one in the form of a brown oil.
