The product from Example 23 (7.25 grams) is heated with 90 ml. of 1 N hydrochloric acid at reflux temperature for 8.5 hours and cooled. The mixture is diluted with water and extracted with methylene chloride. The aqueous layer is then evaporated to dryness using 2-propanol for facilitating removal of water. This gives 4.85 grams of 2-acetyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophen-4-amine hydrochloride.
