Procedure

A mixture of 0.20 g of ethyl 4-hydroxymethyl -2-propyl-1-{4-[2-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in Example 35(c)] and 0.10 g of lithium hydroxide monohydrate in 3 ml of water was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, after which it was allowed to stand for 16 hours at the same temperature. The reaction mixture was then mixed with 2.38 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid and the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, to give 150 mg of the title compound, melting at 233° C. (with decomposition).
