Following a procedure similar to that described in Preparation 42(iv), but using 4.37 g of diethyl 1-benzyl-2-ethoxymethylimidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate [prepared as described in step (i) above], 3.49 g of the hydrochloride of the title compound were obtained as crystals, melting at 60°-61° C.
