The (2-acetyl-3-hydroxy-phenoxy)-acetic acid tert-butyl ester was dissolved in DMF, and heated to 110-130° C. in the presence of potassium carbonate for 4 hours. The resulting suspension was slowly poured into cold water. The product precipitated out and was collected by filtration. Recrystalyzation in toluene afforded 34.26 g of the desired 4-hydroxy-3-methyl-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester as pale yellow solid (60% overall yield).
