Combine 2-methylthio-5-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl)benzoic acid (0.50 g, 2.0 mmol), pyridine (20 mL) and water (20 mL). Cool in an ice bath. Add phenyltrimethylammonium tribromide (0.75 g, 2 mmol) and tetrahydrofuran (20 mL). Warm to ambient temperature. After 1 hour, add a solution of sodium bisulfite (1 g) in water (1 mL). Extract the reaction mixture with ethyl acetate and then dichloromethane. Combine the organic layers, dry over MgSO4, filter, and evaporate in vacuo to give a residue. the title compound. Chromatograph the residue on silica gel eluting sequentially with ethyl acetate and then 10% methanol/ethyl acetate to give methyl 2-methylsulfinyl-5-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl)benzoate.
