Procedure
A solution of 6-hydroxymethyl-1-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)indole (21.0 g) and triphenylphospine (21 g) in a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (200 ml) and carbon tetrachloride (27 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 18 hr under a nitrogen atmosphere. The solution was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with water and brine, dried (MgSO4), and evaporated to give 6-chloromethyl-1-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)indole (21.4 g, 96%) as an ivory solid partial NMR (80 MHz, CDCl3): 2.34 (s, 3H, ArCH3), 4.71(s, 2H, ClCH2), 6.62(dd, 1H, H3 -indole), 8.02(m, 1H, H7 -indole). f. 1-(4-Methylphenylsulfonyl)indole-6-acetonitrile.
