To a solution of 1,1-bis(2-fluoro-4-methylphenyl)-2-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)ethene (1.6 g, 5.0 mmoles) in tetrahydrofuran (20 mL) at -78° C. was added butyl lithium (2.3 mL of a 2.2M solution, 5 mmoles). After stirring for 15 minutes, ethyl formate (0.44 g, 6.0 mmoles) was added and the solution stirred with cooling for 2 hours. The reaction was quenched with 1N hydrochloric acid and the mixture extracted with diethyl ether. The extracts were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was crystallized from isopropyl acetate to give 0.66 g of the title compound; m.p.=154°-155° C.
