A solution of Ethyl 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoate (Step A, 9.10 g, 46.4 mmol) and diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (DIAD, 10.23 g, 50 mmol) in dry THF (20 ml) was added drop wise to a solution of 2,6-Dimethylbenzyl alcohol (6.94 g, 51 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (TPP, 13.27 g, 50 mmol) in dry THF (60 ml) at 0° C. under argon. The reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature for 4 hours or until all the starting material is consumed, diluted with ether and washed with water (2×). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, concentrated, and purified by flash chromatography on a silica gel column (hex: ethyl acetate 2:1) to give the title compound.
