To a solution of methyl 2-methyl-2-(2-methylquinolin-8-yl)propanoate (0.57 g, 2.3 mmol) in THF (10 mL) was added 1 N LAH (5.9 mL, 5.9 mmol) in THF at 0° C. and stirred at 0° C. for 6 hours. Sodium sulfate decahydrate (2.0 g) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 30 minutes. The solid was removed by filtration and washed with ethyl acetate (30 mL). The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (1:1 hexane/ethyl acetate) to give 2-methyl-2-(2-methylquinolin-8-yl)propan-1-ol (0.43 g, 85%) as an oil.
